Coal seam gas mining and the method of extracting the gas (fracking) has led to large numbers of complaints from people and media, who have claimed that fracturing of the rock requires extremely toxic chemicals which contaminate both below ground and above ground water supplies.
The Australian Country Party is strongly committed to the protection of the natural and farming environment.
After considering the available evidence, the Country Party does not support CSG extraction at this point of development of the process. The traditional methods of obtaining natural gas are less harmful to the environment and we still have plentiful off-shore reserves which could supply Australia with all the gas we require.
There are also significant concerns about the legality of fracker’s rights to the use of farmer’s primary production land given the apparent current environmental safety risks.
